Another suspicious case of a missing mom.
- Joshua Powell (husband) claims he left Susan at home in bed around midnight Sunday night to take their 4-year-old and 2-year-old sons camping to test a new generator and make S'mores.
- Husband's sister reported the whole family missing on Monday when neither of them showed up for work.
- Joshua returned home with two boys late Monday.
- Joshua being evasive with reporters when asked questions pertaining to his wife and the camping trip.
- Joshua being odd and evasive around friends of the couple
- Known problems in the marriage: Joshua very controlling; Susan ready to leave him if things didn't improve by spring.
- Police have interviewed Joshua and the 4-year-old son.
- Search warrant was executed at the home.
- Susan's purse, cell phone and credit cards were all left at the home.
- Search of campsite (including the use of dogs) turned up nothing; fresh snow indicated that no one had camped there recently.

From the Deseret News article linked earlier:
Close friend and neighbor Kiirsi Hellewell, who has become the self-appointed advocate for Susan Powell because the woman's family lives in Washington, has pieced together a detailed timeline of events. She said she walked home from church with Susan Powell and her sons around noon Sunday. Another friend from her LDS ward ate dinner with the Powells Sunday evening. That friend told Hellewell she left the home shortly after Susan Powell said she wasn't feeling well and Josh Powell announced that he was going to take the boys sledding and then go eat. |

Isn't that what Nancy Cooper said the night before she was murdered and that was the reason why she left her dinner party early? Wow - I wonder if these women have premonitions?
When are these husbands ever going to learn. Josh Powell, in my opinion, will be arrested eventually...his own sister made the missing persons report! |

A lot more has been reported in this case since I first posted about it. I've been reading the news articles about it, but I haven't had time to engage in any discussion.
- More searches of the home.
- Family van Josh was driving was searched.
- Police found a wet spot on the carpet with two fans aimed at it when they broke into the house out of fear of a carbon monoxide leak.
- Josh hired a high profile criminal defense attorney and clammed up.
- Josh (with the couple's two sons) left Utah to stay with his dad in Puyallup, Washington
Family and friends are less supportive of Joshua than they started out being. Here are some interesting excerpts from a recent article:
| Quote: | Chuck and Judy Cox worked to get to know their new son-in-law, who Chuck Cox said has an "interesting" sense of humor that people don't understand.
He grew frustrated with his son-in-law, who would arrive hours late to family dinners or other functions. Joshua Powell's behavior was an odd departure from the way Chuck and Judy Cox raised Susan, they said.
Some of Susan's friends were also put off by Joshua's seemingly anti-social and awkward behavior.
The Coxes silently wondered if Joshua had a possible mental illness, knowing he had a relative that suffered from bipolar disorder. But Joshua's family summed up the man's eccentric behavior as "Josh is just Josh," Chuck Cox said.
...
The Coxes worried about Joshua and Susan's move to Utah, knowing the couple's history of financial difficulties. Chuck Cox said his daughter would occasionally ask him to talk to Joshua for her when he seemed to be on the brink of making a questionable financial decision.
His son-in-law was usually receptive to Cox's advice, he said.
After Susan's disappearance, court records revealed that she and Joshua had about $200,000 in debt, including a large amount of credit card debt.
...
Susan tended to fall into the role as the family's main breadwinner as Joshua tried to make his career work, Chuck Cox said.
...
Aware that his daughter and her husband had "typical" problems, he believed on a recent visit that her relationship with Joshua had taken a turn for the better. The couple underwent marriage counseling, Chuck Cox said, which encouraged his daughter.
"We were constantly asking her, 'How are things?' And she was telling us that they were better," Chuck Cox said. "And now hearing things ... I think she wasn't telling us the whole story."
"I think she just didn't want us to worry," Judy Cox added. "She wanted to make things work."
Still, the family reached out to Susan out of concern that a day might come when she needed their assistance.
Chuck Cox said he bought his daughter a cell phone when she moved to Utah so she could use it for emergencies. Joshua Powell knew about the phone, he said, but he and Judy paid the bill each month to ensure his daughter had a way to call them.
"We wanted her to be able to call us whenever she wanted -- just on the off chance that if something ever got really weird -- we wanted to cover all of our bases so she could call us for help," he said.

I'm thinking Susan was probably ready to kick Josh to the curb and he knew it. _________________ "People can tell you to shut up, but they
